Trek's Fuel EX series have been the benchmark for full-suspension trail bikes for years, gathering awards along the way. How could Trek improve upon such an outstanding machine? Somehow, they did it.

Trek's Fuel EX 9.7 kept plenty of the right elements from the previous generation of the Fuel EX family. Trek's exclusive OCLV Mountain carbon fiber is still used to produce the main triangle and chainstays, ensuring very low weight and outstanding torsional strength. Anchoring the crankset is a PF92 press-fit bottom bracket, while a tapered head tube enhances front suspension performance and overall handling. What's new? Pull up a chair...

The Fuel EX 9.8's down tube is no longer a heavier curved shape, but completely straight. Preventing the suspension fork crown from smacking the down tube during a tumble is the job of the Knock Block steerer stop found at the top of the head tube. It weighs almost nothing, and is integrated into the headset. There's even an internal storage compartment in the down tube, eliminating the need for a seat bag.  Rough trails require confident control, and Trek's Active Braking Pivot -or ABP- rear suspension geometry ensures excellent suspension performance, even under hard braking on rough descents. The upper magnesium rocker link is a one-piece unit that resists torsional twisting that might inhibit the rear shock. Trek eliminated the Fuel EX's Full Floater lower shock installation in favor of a fixed installation, reducing weight and enhancling torsional strength. A clever detail can be found at the back of the upper suspension rocker where it meets the upper seat stays: a reverseable Mino Link chip that can alter the geometry of the Fuel EX 9.7 to be either upright and nimble, or slack and stable. The rear shock is a new air-adjustable Fox Performance Float EVOL unit that boasts 130mm of suspension travel. Developed with input from Penske Racing Shocks, the rear shock boasts RE:aktiv suspension technology with a 3-position damper for excellent control in technical terrain. Up front, an air-adjustable Fox Rhythm 34 Float EVOL suspension fork keeps the front wheel planted through rock gardens. 140mm of suspension travel performance can be adjusted on the fly with a 3-position damper on the fork crown. Thru-axles front and rear bring added torsional strength to the wheelset and the bike as a whole.

Shifting performance in technical singletrack is crucial, and Trek knew that single-ring drivetrain technology has come of age. SRAM's latest 12-speed Eagle shifting operates smoothly, even under hard pedaling loads. A SRAM NX Eagle shifter is paired with an NX Eagle derailleur, making lightning-quick gear changes simple. An 11-50T SRAM Eagle cassette boasts a massive gearing range, while an alloy Truvativ Descendant 6k Eagle 32T single-ring crankset does power delivery duties. Bontrager's tubeless-ready alloy Line Comp 30 wheelset features a wide width; perfect for supporting meaty 2.60" Bontrager XR4 Team Issue tires. The hubs are also extra-wide Boost110/148 units, adding an extra dash of torsional strength for even sharper handling. Shimano's new 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes bring confident stopping power to the Fuel EX 9.7 in all conditions, rain or shine (or mud). Bontrager's Evoke 3 saddle sits atop a Bontrager Line dropper post, while an alloy Bontrager Line stem grips a 35mm alloy Line handlebar. Lock-on Bontrager XR Trail Elite grips complete this outstanding singletrack warrior.
