When asked about Trek's Domane SLR 8, the owner might say, "It's a bike that lets you ride it for as long as you want."

That is a totally accurate statement. This flagship of the 2018 Domane series of road bicycles will handle good roads and bad roads (and downright terrible excuses for "roads") with aplomb. Weighing in at only 16-1/2 lbs, the Domane SLR 8 ensures that steep inclines aren't nearly as intimidating as they may have been. The handling of the Domane SLR is stable over rough surfaces without handling like a barge. Endurance Geometry isn't just a buzzword for "upright fit", but also describes a predictable feel at all speeds whilst going up hill and down dale. If the upright fit doesn't quite suit you, simply flipping over the stem is easy for a more aggressive position. It just works better for more riders over any distance.

Beginning with Trek's exclusive 600 Series OCLV carbon fiber, the Domane SLR uses aerospace-grade materials to keep weight low, overall strength high and ride quality exceptional. The key to the Domane SLR's smooth ride quality is Trek's exclusive IsoSpeed decoupler technology. By allowing the seat tube/seat mast to flex vertically with a set of cartridge bearings, the Domane SLR can tackle cobblestone roads, potholes and broken asphalt while keeping the rider comfortable and fresher for longer.  Adjusting the Domane SLR's rear IsoSpeed seatmast is forehead-slap simple: Just loosen the lowest bottle cage bolt on the seat tube and move the slider up or down. Retighten with the included torque key. Yes, that's it. For century rides over bad roads, just slide it down. For spirited club rides or fast training, slide it back up. Tiny adjustments can be made to suit the rider's desired feel. Cool, huh? Up front, the Domane SLR has another IsoSpeed decoupler at the top of the head tube. Both IsoSpeed decouplers combine to keep the rider comfortable over century rides. Or double century rides. Or longer. Knowing that this bicycle would be used at some of the most torturous races on the professional calendar, Trek engineered it for incredible strength. The faceted shape of the frame's main triangle is called Power Transfer Construction; shaping the frame tubes to resist torsional flex and send the rider forward without wasting energy. Flex-free power delivery makes every hill take less time to climb.

The Domane SLR 8 isn't just about lightness and adaptability to conditions. There are plenty of useful details that help the rider concentrate on the job at hand: Enjoying the ride.

  • An adjustable 3S chain keeper that prevents dropped chains, greasy fingers and roadside stops
  • An aperture in the left chainstay for a DuoTrap S speed/cadence sensor (sold separately), eliminating the need for clumsy zip-ties
  • A press-fit BB90 bottom bracket that anchors the crankset for flex-free power delivery, especially during uphill, out-of-the-saddle efforts
  • Internal cable routing that not only manages cables and housing, but reduces annoying rattle
  • Vanishing fender mounts that keep an unladen bike looking sleek until they're needed

When Trek decided to equip the Domane SLR 8 with Shimano's recently refined Dura-Ace components, they were making a statement that they had the best endurance "chassis" in the business. Every Dura-Ace component is designed to bring pro-level performance and feel along with incredibly long service life. A 50/34T alloy compact crankset and 11-28T cassette offers a wide gearing range for day-long hilly rides. Carbon fiber lever blades take weight off large control components, while a new toggle-pivot front derailleur is easier to adjust and operate than ever before. Everything got a tweak or was made more functional for a better-performing bicycle.

    • Slimmer levers and textured Dura-Ace hoods for a more comfortable feel and grip as well as reach adjustability
    • Improved shift lever feel and shape with shorter shifter throws
    • New Shadow-style Dura-Ace rear derailleur that requires less effort at the shift lever, even under hard pedaling loads
    • Stiffer, more aero crankset with asymmetric hollow spider arms

The Domane SLR 8 features Bontrager's tubeless-ready alloy Paradigm Elite wheels. Calling the wheels "featherweight" is easy at only 1490 grams for the set, but there's far more to them than lightness. Stacked, straight-pull spoke lacing adds lateral rigidity and reduces spoke fatigue over the wheel's lifespan. The hubs are built by DT Swiss for incredibly precise construction and quality. The inner rim width measures 19.5mm, allowing the tire to improve its contact patch on the pavement for better cornering grip. With a set of profiled rim strips, sealent and gasketed valve stems, the Paradigm Elite wheels can be set up tubeless with a wide range of tires. This nearly eliminates flats due to small punctures and also reduces rolling resistance. Bontrager's direct-mount Speed Stop brake calipers bring pro-level stopping performance to the Domane SLR 8, ensuring predictable performance and excellent lever feedback.

The Domane SLR 8 needed a last line of defense against harsh road chatter and vibration. The Bontrager saddle and handlebar that make up the cockpit fulfill that purpose with flying colors. The Bontrager Pro IsoCore VR-CF road handlebars were engineered with a layer of elastomer between the lightweight layers of carbon fiber that make up the bar's structure. This eliminates up to 20% more fatiguing vibration to the rider's hands and making every mile smoother. The Ti-railed Bontrager Affinity Elite saddle offers up comfort that carbon-shelled ultralight saddles fall short on. Precisely placed multi-density padding helps soak up whatever vibration managed to make it through the rest of the Domane SLR to the rider. An accessory-ready alloy Bontrager Pro Blendr stem makes computer and light installation a snap.
