The Fuel EX 5 has been refined, making the bike lighter while still performing as expected in all trail conditions.

The main triangle of the frame is the "backbone" of the Fuel EX 5. Built with Trek's Alpha Platinum aluminum, it brings light weight and immense torsional strength to the Fuel EX 5. Strength is needed for more than power transfer from the crankset, but also smoothly functioning suspension and brakes. Without strength, a mountain bike just won't go where you point it. The Fuel EX 5's Active Braking Pivot -or ABP- rear suspension geometry ensures that the rear tire won't be affected by braking or pedaling forces because the rear pivot point is the thru-axle. This is critical for control, especially when descending a technical trail into a tight, unforgiving rock garden. The one-piece EVO Link upper suspension link resists torsional stress, allowing the rear shock to operate without lateral biding. The Fuel EX 5's handling geometry can be altered by reversing the Mino Link chips found on the upper magnesium rocker ink. When done, the bike's head tube angle can be slackened and the bottom bracket dropped for a more stable feel on rocky trails and harrowing descents. A tapered head tube adds precision to the Fuel EX 5's handling in fast corners, while a PF92 bottom bracket adds flex-free power delivery through the crankset. Clever Control Freak internal routing keeps the bike's cables out of the dirt while all but eliminating rattle and friction-inducing tight bends. The Straight Shot down tube reduces weight and improves torsional strength further, while a Knock Block steerer stop at the top of the head tube prevents frame damage from spinning bars and fork crowns.

The suspension Trek chose for the Fuel EX 5 brings trail-taming control on technical features. The rear air-adjustable RockShox Deluxe Select+ shock allows a wider range of riders of different weights to alter the ride quality and traction of the bike, adding 140mm of rear suspension travel. This tuneable shock can react to impacts both large and small, bringing control to a wide range of riding situations. Up front, an air-adjustable RockShox Recon RL suspension fork helps keep the bike where you point it, with 140mm of travel. Both shocks have an adjustable rebound as well, letting the rider tune the bike's suspension for technical trails and big hits, or just bumpy washboard.

The Fuel EX 5's drivetrain consists of Shimano's 10-speed Deore shifter and derailleur. The Shadow+ Deore rear derailleur ensures precise operation, even while crossing rough terrain and resisting chain drop with a clutch mechanism. An alloy RaceFace Ride crankset with a single 30T chainring does power delivery duties. An 11-42T 10-speed cassette boasts a wide gearing range for roller-coaster trails.

The Fuel EX 5's rolling stock consists of tubeless-ready alloy 35mm-wide Alex MD35 wheels and Bontrager XR4 tubeless-ready Team Issue tires. The two smallest frame sizes get 27.5x2.6" tires, while the rest get 29x2.6" tires. Smaller wheels make sense on smaller frames, allowing a better fit and shorter standover height. Larger wheels bring a larger tire contact patch for heavier riders that need it the most. Shimano's hydraulic disc brakes handle stopping duties in all conditions, rain or shine (or mud).

A Bontrager Arvada saddle sits atop a clever component: A TranzX dropper post with a bar-mounted remote lever. A single press and the saddle can get out of the way on hairy descents and "tip-ins". An alloy Rhythm Comp stem, alloy handlebar and XR Comp lock-on grips complete this excellent trail-taming machine.
