This is a bike that has a little extra in the component list: A Fox fork upgrade for no extra cost!

The Fuel EX platform is an award-winning machine, taking top honors from magazines and websites both in the bike industry and out. This version is a true world-beater, equipped with a wish list of high-performance components and wheels. It all starts with Trek's exclusive OCLV Mountain carbon fiber frame, giving the Fuel EX 9.8 a featherweight feel with Herculean strength for handling and durability on tough trails and scary descents. Proven G2 geometry gives the Fuel EX 9.8 a nimble feel without being a handful. A tapered head tube and press-fit PF92 bottom bracket anchor the Straight Shot downtube, adding considerable rigidity to the Fuel EX's frame without adding weight. Why is Straight Shot different? Because the curved down tubes found on other suspension-equipped bikes add weight but are still required to prevent the fork crown from striking the frame in the event of a tumble. But the Fuel EX 9.8 is equipped with a clever Knock Block steerer stop at the stem and upper headset, preventing the fork crown from damaging the frame. Trek's exclusive Active Braking Pivot (or ABP) rear suspension geometry allows the rear shock to soak up rough singletrack without being affected by braking forces or pedaling inputs. A one-piece EVO Link upper suspension all but eliminates lateral biding in the rear shock, ensuring smooth operation on technical surfaces. The Full Floater shock mount allows the shock to respond better to washboard surfaces as well as hard impacts and dropoffs. Want to give the Fuel EX 9.8 a different feel on different trails? The reversible Mino link found at the upper ABP swingarm and can be flipped to allow the bike's center of gravity to change as well as the geometry. An air-adjustable Fox Performance Float EVOL rear shock with a Thru Shaft design deals with technical terrain and impacts both large and small at the rear wheel. Thru Shaft allows the rear shock to react faster to sudden hits on the trail, helping to keep the rear wheel planted on the ground instead of remaining airborne. More ground contact means more control, and it's an exclusive technology to Trek with help from the Formula 1 suspension experts at Penske Racing! Up front, this Fuel EX 9.8 is equipped with an air-adjustable Fox Factory 34 Float suspension fork that lets you tweak performance with a 3-position Grip damper. 130mm of suspension travel lets you soak up hard impacts as well as remaining supple on a day-long adventure. A slick coating on the upper fork legs resists "stiction", giving the bike a more comfortable feel on chattery washboard trails.

SRAM's 12-speed GX Eagle mountain components are designed for flawless operation in terrible conditions. This Fuel EX 9.8 features a Roller Bearing Clutch GX Eagle derailleur that nearly eliminates chain slap while keeping the chain firmly on the crankset. A GX Eagle 12-speed rear shifter requires less hand effort than previous generations, allowing you to keep your concentration on the trail ahead. Out back, a massive 10-50T SRAM XG-1275 Eagle cassette offers a gearing range that will help tame the most challenging singletrack. A Truvativ Descendant 7k Eagle crankset features a 32T Direct-Mount chainring for lightness and simplicity.

Rolling stock consisits of Bontrager's Line Carbon 30 wheels. They're carbon fiber (yes, carbon fiber), tubeless ready, and are wrapped with Bontrager's meaty 29x2.40" XR Team Issue tubeless-ready tires for bags of grip on gnarly trails. Boost 110/148 hub spacing and thru-axle dropouts provide excellent lateral rigidity for improved handling. A 54T Rapid Drive rear hub reduces cassette "free play", allowing the rider to put down power much earlier in the pedal stroke. The Fuel EX 9.8's Shimano SLX hydraulic disc brakes feature adjustable-reach levers and excellent lever feedback for confident stopping in a wide range of trail conditions.

A Bontrager Arvada Elite saddle sits atop a Line dropper post that is operated with a bar-mounted remote lever. Getting the saddle out of your way on steep drops is a one-button operation, and will adjust up (or down) to 125mm for this 17.5" frame size. An alloy Bontrager Line Pro stem and an OCLV carbon fiber Line Pro handlebar finishes off the cockpit of this trail-conquering machine.
