If you have last-second questions about how well your current mountain bike will handle a white-knuckle descent, Remedy is the answer.

The Trek Remedy 9.8 27.5 (yeah, it's a mouthful) has been refined, reworked and distilled since the first version five years ago. Back when 26" wheels and long stems were the norm, riders were tackling technical trails and rock-strewn descents thinking, "How can a bike get better?". The new Remedy 9.8 boasts plenty of upgrades, including the geometry of the whole bike. Slacker angles, a longer top tube, a shorter stem and a much burlier fork lets the Remedy 9.8 charge down terrifying drops and trails that the old version wouldn't even look down! Confident control is what the Remedy 9.8 is all about.

The handling is better, but what about the frame and suspension package? Trek utilized their proprietary OCLV Mountain carbon fiber to build a durable mainframe suitable for brutal, jarring rock gardens and root-strewn singletrack. A tapered E2 head tube and press-fit PF92 bottom bracket combines with the Straight Shot downtube to produce a strong, highly efficient and very lightweight chassis for the suspension to operate around. Out back, an Active Braking Pivot -or ABP- rear suspension geometry pivots around the rear thru-axle, eliminating "pedal bob" and suspension stiffening under braking. The one-piece EVO Link upper pivot is part of the Full Floater shock mount, allowing the rear shock to respond better to washboard surfaces as well as hard landings. Trek took a look at the EVO Link and decided to add a clever feature to the Remedy 9.8: The Mino Link. With one tool, a rider can remove and flip a chip in each side of the EVO Link, producing a slightly slacker geometry for improved stability. Returning it to the original position adds an extra dash of sharpness to the Remedy 9.8's handling. Cool, huh? Installed in that Full Floater shock mount is the latest offering from RockShox: The air-adjustable Deluxe RT3 with Thru-Shaft technology. Thru-Shaft allows the Remedy to be even smoother and more planted through the rough stuff, thanks to the shock's ability to respond to hard bumps in rapid succession. With input from shock specialists Penske Racing Shocks, the Thru-Shaft rear shock makes every trail even smoother. Up front, the air-adjustable RockShox Lyrik RCT3 suspension fork sports massive 35mm (!!) stanchions and a stronger fork crown, improving the Remedy 9.8's handling in the twisties and under braking.

SRAM's 12-speed Eagle GX shifter and Roller Bearing Clutch rear derailleur handle drivetrain duties, bringing lightning-quick operation to the Remedy 9.8. A massive 10-50T SRAM cassette brings a gearing range suitable for challenging climbs and descents on day-long adventures. A SRAM Descendant 7k Eagle crankset is equipped with a single 32T Direct-Mount X-Sync chainring along with an adjustable MRP chain guide.

Rolling stock on the Remedy 9.8 consists of Bontrager's alloy all-mountain wheels: Line Elite 30. This tubeless-ready wheelset features a 33mm-wide rim that allows the tire tread to spread out and provide traction in loose conditions. A 108-point engagement rear freehub ensures faster response in all conditions, while extra-wide Boost110/148 hubs add an extra dash of precision in tight and technical trails. Bontrager's meaty 27.5x2.40" SE4 Team Issue tubeless-ready tires provide excellent grip on a wide variety of surfaces, from hardpan to rocky stair-step descents. SRAM's Guide RS hydraulic disc brakes help bring control to every high-speed run.

A Ti-railed Bontrager Evoke 3 saddle sits atop a Drop Line dropper post. A bar-mounted remote lever allows the saddle to dive out of the way on steep tip-in descents. An OCLV carbon fiber Line Pro handlebar is clamped by a burly Line Pro Knock Block stem that prevents the fork crown from smacking the down tube in the event of a crash.
