Some owners of hardtail cross-country machines will openly brag about their bike's nimble feel, instant pedaling response and feather-light weight. But when you ask them how that same wonder-bike would feel after 2 or more hours, they'll probably clam up. Yes, hardtails seem to have a reputation for being downright hostile to their riders.

But the Trek ProCaliber 8 is different.

The ProCaliber 8 is equipped with a clever technology that Trek has had on other bikes for a few years: IsoSpeed. The IsoSpeed decoupler found at the seat tube/top tube juncture adds frame compliance while attacking washboard surfaces and stutter-bump trails. Over the course of a multi-hour event or training ride, that can mean the difference between an alert rider and a tired rider that makes time-wasting mistakes. The IsoSpeed decoupler doesn't make the ProCaliber 8 feel rubbery in the turns or when you put the power down, thanks to clever frame tube shaping. That hydroformed Alpha Platinum aluminum frame helps to make the ProCaliber 8 a precision racer that is unburdened by a rough ride quality. A tapered E2 head tube adds handling precision to the ProCaliber 8, especially in technical sections and rock gardens. The crankset delivers flex-free power to the rear wheel, thanks to the press-fit PF92 bottom bracket.

An air-adjustable RockShox Reba RL suspension fork helps keep the front wheel where you point it, boasting 100mm of travel. A remote lockout lever on the handlebar is handy for attacking gravel or road sections. A thru-axle front hub dropout adds extra handling prowess, too. Shimano's 11-speed SLX shifters operate with lightning-quickness for attacking the trails in exactly the right gear. The Shimano Deore XT rear derailleur on the ProCaliber 8 is their Shadow+ version, eliminating chain slap and dropped chains with an integrated tensioner. A Shimano SLX front derailleur with side-swing operation makes front shifting even easier. A RaceFace Next R 36/26T crankset with carbon fiber arms keeps rotating weight low, while a Shimano SLX 11-42T cassette boasts a huge gearing range for steep ascents and descents.

Bontrager's tubeless-ready alloy Duster Elite wheels feature Boost 110/148 hubs, producing a more rigid wheel. Bontrager also provides the tubeless-ready XR2 Team Issue tires, bringing boatloads of grip to the party. Shimano hydraulic disc brakes do speed control duty in all conditions, rain or shine. A Bontrager Montrose Comp saddle, Bontrager Pro OCLV carbon fiber seatpost, alloy Bontrager Elite stem, and Bontrager Race Lite handlebar completes this smooth-riding speed machine.
