Breathtaking, isn't it? After years of in-house engineering and thousands of hours of road testing, Trek has produced a bicycle that is nothing short of brilliant.

The Madone model started in 2004, with the original aero road bike: Lightweight, but equipped with tapered tube shapes and "tails" on the frame, allowing it to slice through the air more cleanly. This machine, the most recent version of the Madone, takes aerodynamics very seriously. Fully internal cable routing and and Kammtail Virtual Foil (or KVF) frame shaping keeps the Madone's drag numbers astonishingly low. In fact, the only cable visible to the wind is found at the rear derailleur! But before a single aerodynamic line of the new Madone was drawn, the carbon fiber used to build the bike had to be revolutionary.

Trek's 600 Series OCLV carbon fiber is constructed of multiple qualities of raw carbon material, allowing the Madone's frameset to resist torsional twisting, maintain a smooth ride quality, and keep weight astonishingly low. By compacting the raw carbon fiber material during heated curing, Trek reduces the amount of resin needed for each frame, ensuring excellent quality control from the first frame to the last. Finite Element Analysis allowed the engineering team at Trek to refine every square inch of raw material used in the Madone's frame, so no extra carbon fiber will be found anywhere from the smallest size to the largest. Even the Madone's fork got the same obsessive attention to detail as the rest of the frame, including the same KVF shaping and all-carbon OCLV construction.

With all that going for it, the Madone design team could've call it a day. But they didn't. They had a long list of already-existing technologies that Trek had in its library to add to the Madone. Here's the short list:

  • A tapered E2 head tube that enhances handling, especially in high-speed turns and descent
  • A press-fit BB90 bottom bracket, ensuring flex-free power delivery through the crankset
  • Trek's own IsoSpeed decoupler technology at the seat tube/down tube juncture that smoothes out rough pavement, keeping the rider fresher for longer
  • An aperture in the left chainstay allows the installation of a DuoTrap S speed/cadence sensor (sold separately) without the use of clumsy zip-ties
  • An aero-shaped 3S chain keeper that prevents chain drop, and the greasy fingers that come with it

By stowing the internals of the front brake calipers under a set of clever trapdoors -or "vector wings"- the front end of the Madone is as sleek as an F1 car. The integrated brake calipers themselves are improvements on garden-variety designs, producing excellent lever feedback and and overall stopping power.

The Madone 9.9 is equipped with Shimano's latest interation of their legandary Dura-Ace component group: 9150 series Di2. Yes, this is shifting at it's finest. Lightning-quick operation that is perfect. Every. Single. Time. Shimano's Di2 drivetrains boast incredible efficiency, with 900-1000 miles between charges of the internal battery. The charging port is found in the Control Center at the Madone's down tube for easy access. As you shift across the rear cassette, it even trims the front derailleur for you automatically. Cool, huh? The Dura-Ace rear derailleur can now take a cassette of up to 30T, giving the rider a wider choice of gearing when tackling hilly or challenging courses. The dual-control Dura-Ace Di2 levers feature adjustable reach for smaller hands, while hidden buttons under the peak of the lever hoods can be programmed for rear shifting. The redesigned 50/34T Dura-Ace compact crankset is noticeably stiffer than the previous version, as well as much more aero. An 11-28T Dura-Ace cassette brings a wide gearing ratio for competitive riders.

Bontrager supplies the Aeolus 5 D3 wheelset, adding another excellent bit of aerodynamic weaponry to the Madone. Once again, feather-light OCLV carbon fiber is used to build these incredibly aero wheels that are engineered to be fast in crosswind situations. The D3 (Dual Directional Design) rim profile keeps the Madone stable in gusty conditions with their bullet-nose profile. DT Swiss internals at the rear hub keep Bontrager's Aeolus wheels feeling bulletproof, even when stomping on the pedals during an uphill, out-of-the-saddle sprint. Looking for a tubeless-ready wheelset? The Bontrager Aeolus 5's just need rim strips and gasketed valve stems (sold separately). Bontrager also supplies the 700x25c R3 tires.

Up front, the one-piece integrated KVF handlebar/stem unit offers excellent road feel while still providing excellent vibration control. The handlebars are available in 13 stem/handlebar sizes. Accessory mounts installed in the bars' leading edge allow the use of computers, lights or even a GoPro without zip-ties. Internal cable routing through the handlebar, stem and finally the tapered headset spacers helps keep the Madone the sleekest road bike in the peloton. The seatpost/seatmast uses a telescoping internal mast that can be changed to allow for different seat clamp setbacks (5mm or 25mm) and lengths, making bike fits easier for a wider range of riders. A carbon-railed Bontrager Montrose Pro saddle completes this world-beating road bike.

A Shimano charging cable is included with the purchase of this bicycle.
