The 2019 Trek FX S 5 has made us scratch our collective chins, thinking that Trek couldn't improve on their last version of the same bike. But they did.

The FX S 5 Women's keeps the same ultralight 400 Series OCLV carbon fiber material from last year, but upgrades things like smaller thru-axles, flat-mount disc brakes and a shorter standover height. What does this do for the FX S 5? It makes it a lighter, cleaner machine that fits more riders. But what did Trek keep? Plenty...

The FX S 5 boasts an upright fit and stable geometry, making it an excellent machine for navigating bike paths and city streets. Trek's exclusive IsoSpeed decoupler found at the top of the seat tube/top tube juncture adds a fantastically smooth ride to an already high-performing bike. Clearence for wide tires and fenders add versatility to the FX S 5, especially for commuting. The tapered E2 head tube and press-fit BB86.5 bottom bracket provides impressive torsional strength for quick pedaling response. Internal cable routing and an aperture in the left chainstay for a DuoTrap S speed/cadence sensor (sold separately) add to the FX S 5's already clean look.

The FX S 5 isn't just a runabout for daily trips to work, but a high-performance machine ready for day-long adventures in the countryside. Equipping the FX S 5 with Shimano's 10-speed Tiagra flat-bar shifters and derailleurs brings fingertip operation and lightning-quick gear changes to the rider. A 50/34T compact Tiagra crankset and 11-34T Shimano Tiagra cassette offer a massive gearing range for steep ascents and fast pavement. 28-spoke tubeless-ready alloy Bontrager wheels are shod with 700x32c Bontrager AW2 Hard-Case Lite tires for easy acceleration and a smooth feel. Helping to keep speed in check is the job of Tektro's hydraulic disc brakes. Rain or shine, disc brakes ensure predictable braking performance when needed. Bontrager adds an Ajna 1 women's saddle atop an alloy seatpost, while an accessory-ready alloy Blendr stem can mount a computer, light or phone mount (sold separately) in easy reach. Touchpoints for your hands are important, and the FX S 5 has an alloy IsoSpeed handlebar and long-tail Satellite IsoSpeed Plus grips for a comfy grip over every mile.
