Fuel EX has a purpose: Helping the rider meet every challenge the trail throws at them. From gnarly singletrack to challenging climbs to hair-raising descents, the Fuel EX 9.7 is ready for whatever is around the next curve.

For the the Fuel EX 9.7 to live up to the high performance expecations, the frame needed to be outstanding. Trek's exclusive OCLV Mountain carbon fiber frame material allows the Fuel EX 9.7 to help deliver power through the crankset, handle twisty trails at speed, and make sure the needle on the scale barely moves. The frame is the "backbone" of any bicycle, and the demands placed on the Fuel EX 9.7 are considerable. Even the suspension needs to have rock-solid mounting points to ensure every bump is handled without binding or friction due to a flexy frame. Anchoring those components help keep the rider's energy focused on moving down the trail, like the PF92 bottom bracket that anchors the crankset. The tapered E2 head tube helps keep the front wheel pointed when you want it, while the Straight Shot down tube improves torsional strength further for more precise handling. The frame does all this with astonishing lightness as well.

The Active Braking Pivot -or ABP for short- rear suspension geometry is another Trek exclusive. By placing the rearmost pivot at the center of the rear hub, the Fuel EX 9.7 is unaffected by rear braking forces or pedaling dynamics. No compression under hard braking, and no "pedal bob". Brilliant! The upper suspension link is a one-piece EVO Link unit that resists torsional stresses that would add friction to the rear shock, but remains lightweight. The Full Floater shock mount itself allows the air-adjustable Fox Performance Float EVOL unit to react better to washboard bumps and big hits with equal ease. How big a hit? The Fuel EX 9.7 has 130mm of rear suspension travel for cushioning those unexpected dropoffs and keep you in control. Looking to add a different feel to your Fuel EX? By rotating the Mino Link pivot points at the top of the seat stays, the whole frame can be lowered slightly, giving the bike a more stable feel on rough downhills. The Fuel EX 9.7's air-adjustable Fox Rhythm 34 Float suspension fork brings 130mm of suspension travel to the party, adding an extra dash of confident control. An adjustable damper knob allows for easy on-the-fly adjustment. A 15mm thru-axle improves suspension response during lateral impacts as well.

SRAM's 11-speed NX components give the Fuel EX 9.7 a combination of simplicity and positive operation with its single-ring drivetrain. An NX shifter, NX Roller Bearing Clutch rear derailleur, NX single-ring crankset with 32T X-Sync Direct-Mount chainring and an 11-42T SRAM cassette provide the rider with lightning-quick shifting and a massive gearing range for roller-coaster trails and challenging singletrack.

The wheelset of the Fuel EX 9.7 has also seen considerable refinement. A wide rim profile that's tubeless-ready, stacked lacing for lateral stiffness, and Boost 110/148 hubs give the wheels every advantage when attacking rock gardens. A pair of tubeless-ready Bontrager 29x2.40" XR4 Team Issue tires feature aggressive tread for enhanced grip in loose and rocky trails. Helping to keep speed under control is a set of SRAM Guide R hydraulic disc brakes. Disc brakes are unaffected by rain, mud and trail slop, so descend with confidence!

The details make all the difference in the touchpoints of the Fuel EX 9.7. A Drop Line dropper post with handlebar remote allows the Evoke 2 saddle to get out of the way on precipitous descents, while a 35mm alloy Bontrager Line handlebar and Line stem complete this trail-conquering masterpiece.
