The Fuel EX 5 WSD sees upgrades aplenty for 2018. The tubeless-ready Schwable Rocket Ron tires are meatier 27.5x2.80", boasting a huge contact patch on the trails. Loose gravel and rock gardens can be attacked with greater confidence. Trek's Active Braking Pivot -or ABP- rear suspension geometry ensures that the rear tire won't be affected by braking or pedaling forces because the rear pivot point is the thru-axle. This is critical for control, especially when descending a technical trail into a tight, unforgiving hairpin. The one-piece EVO Link upper suspension link resists torsional stress, allowing the rear shock to operate without lateral biding. The Full Floater rear shock mount reacts to small bumps better, reducing rider fatigue. The Fuel EX 5's handling geometry can be altered by reversing the Mino Link chips found on the EVO Link. When done, the bike's head tube angle can be slackened and the bottom bracket dropped for a more stable feel on broken, rocky terrain.

The Fuel EX 5 is built around an Alpha Platinum aluminum frame that keeps total bike weight low while retaining torsional strength to handle twisty trails and powerful riders. The frame's fit and design favors female riders better with a shorter standover height and taller head tube. How short? A 27.2" standover for the 14" frame size! An E2 tapered head tube adds precision to the Fuel EX 5's handling in fast corners, while a PF92 bottom bracket adds flex-free power delivery through the crankset. Clever Control Freak internal routing keeps the bike's cables out of the dirt while all but eliminating rattle and friction-inducing tight bends. The Straight Shot down tube reduces weight and improves torsional strength further.

The suspension Trek chose for the Fuel EX 5 brings trail-taming control on technical features. The rear air-adjustable RockShox Deluxe RL shock allows a wider range of riders of different weights to alter the ride quality and traction of the bike. This tuneable shock can react to impacts both large and small, bringing control to a wide range of riding situations. Up front, an air-adjustable RockShox Recon Silver suspension fork helps keep the bike where you point it, with 140mm of travel (120mm on the 14 and 15.5" sizes). A Motion Control adjustable damper knob on the fork crown also allows on-the-fly adjustment.

The Fuel EX 5's drivetrain consists of Shimano's 10-speed Deore shifters and derailleurs. A Shadow+ Deore rear derailleur ensures precise operation, even while crossing rough terrain. The forward-swing front derailleur operates with lightning speed, even under hard pedaling loads. A Shimano 11-42T cassette and Race Face Ride 36/22T crankset bring a massive gearing range to the party.

For those massive Schwalbe Rocket Ron tires, SUNringle's tubeless-ready alloy Duroc 40 SL wheels form an excellent partnership. The wide rim profile keeps the tire's contact patch wide and aggressive, bringing outstanding grip in fast and twisty singletrack. Enhancing those wheels and tires are a pair of Boost110/148 thru-axle hubs. By widening the hub flanges, the spokes are built onto the rims at a wider angle. This makes the wheelset laterally stronger for even better control in fast curves and descents. Helping to keep speed reigned in is a set of Shimano hydraulic disc brakes that work in all conditions, rain or shine (or mud).

Bontrager's Evoke 1.5 saddle sits atop an alloy SSR seatpost, while a Bontrager Rhythm Comp stem and headset prevents frame damage in a crash with the aid of a Knock Block headset limiter. That Straight Shot down tube will remain dent-free (even if the rider is a clumsy newbie) thanks to Knock Block. An alloy Bontrager Race Lite handlebar and Race grips finishes off this amazing off-road warrior.
