The Farley 9.6 brings light weight and high performance to fat bikes at a surprisingly agreeable price.

When fat bike first appeared, they were immediately criticized as heavy and clumsy. "Like pushing a wheelbarrow full of bricks" kind of heavy. Trek set about changing that, and have produced an outstanding machine that also carries a lighter pricetag.

Light weight is always the goal in bicycle design, no matter what the job is. Sufficient strength is also required for predictable handling, especially when the bike needs to make use of grippy 4.50" tires. Trek's exclusive OCLV Mountain carbon fiber is perfect for the job, allowing the designers to take pounds off the frame and fork while retaining the high torsional strength needed for excellent handling and power transfer. The overall frame shape of the Farley 9.6 adds even more strength with an oversized down tube, flex-free PF121 press-fit bottom bracket and tapered E2 head tube. An adjustable Stranglehold thru-axle rear dropout allows the rider to change the wheelbase of the Farley 9.6, allowing for more mud clearance or smaller (less large?) tires. Frame geometry isn't ponderous, but instead uses Trek's own G2 mountain bike geometry for confident handling. Internal cable routing for the rear derailleur keeps the Farley 9.6 looking clean and sleek, too.

Keeping weight down in the Farley 9.6's drivetrain was actually easy, thanks to a single-ring SRAM drivetrain. SRAM's 11-speed GX shifter and Roller Bearing Clutch rear derailleur add precise operation over rough terrain and messy conditions, while a 10-42T cassette and Race Face Aeffect 28T crankset bring a huge gearing range to the party. Durable 32-spoke SUNringle Mulefut 80 SL wheels also keep rotating mass down, thanks to cutouts between the spoke ends. Massive 27.5x4.50" Bontrager Barbegazi tires are tubeless-ready, and  are ready for snow, slush, sand and loose singletrack. Keeping speed under control is the job of SRAM's Level T hydraulic disc brakes. SRAM's DOT hydraulic fluid ensure predictable stopping performance and lever feedback down to sub-freezing temperatures. Bontrager also supplies the Rhythm Elite alloy seatpost, Evoke 2 saddle, Rhythm Elite handlebar and accessory-ready alloy Elite Blendr stem.
