The Emonda SLR 8 Disc is one of Trek's flagship machines. Just pick it up, and you'll know...

Using absurdly, stupifyingly light 700 Series carbon fiber is just a small part of why the Emonda SLR 8 Disc is such an incredible bike. The frame engineers at Trek knew that the right combination of different qualities of carbon fiber can make a bike perform effortlessly. Immense torsional strength is needed to help with power transfer and precise handling. Measurable frame compliance can take the edge off rough pavement and keep the rider fresher for longer, making the difference in a final sprint to the finish line. Several different qualities of carbon fiber are used to produce these seemingly confliciting performance characteristics. When Trek uses their Optimum Compaction, Low Void (or OCLV) manufacturing process, they reduce the need for excess resin in the frame, keeping overall weight low and improving quality control.

They could use garden-variety frame elements seen on bikes around the world, but Trek knew they cound make a bike better. A Ride Tuned seatmast and cap still allows for plenty of saddle adjustment, but the seatmast itself adds an extra dash of smoothness to the ride quality. It also cuts more weight off the Emonda SLR's frame, especially at the top of the bike where it counts more for out-of-the-saddle sprinters and uphill efforts. A press-fit BB90 bottom bracket anchors the crankset better than a thread-in unit while still keeping weight low. Adding a tapered head tube allowed the engineers to build an oversized down tube that enhances the frame's torsional strength while still keeping weight down. Flat-mount disc brake installation and 12mm thru-axles also improves frame strength as well as reducing weight.

The Emonda SLR 8 Disc needed a world-beating component group to ensure the bike would remain light, and Trek chose Shimano's best: Dura-Ace 9100. The recent redesign of the pro-level component group saw subtle but noticeable changes across the board, from lever throw to derailleur construction to crankset profile. What could be improved with Dura-Ace? Here's a short list:

  •
  • Shadow-style Dura-Ace 9100 rear derailleur that hides from the wind, shifts better, makes wheel changes easier, and takes up to a 30T rear cog
  •
  • Dura-Ace 9100 front derailleur boasts intergrated cable adjustment and clears wider road and cyclocross tires better
  •
  • Dura-Ace 9100 50/34T compact crankset is just as rigid and more aero than 9000-series Dura-Ace and yet still lighter
  •
  • Flat-mount Dura-Ace hydraulic disc brakes are Shimano's lightest hydro units, and clamp down on new RT-900 three-layer ICE Tech rotors
  •
  • Adjustable-reach Dura-Ace levers are wrapped with improved hoods and have a shorter shifting throw along with a more tactile shift feel

The Emonda SLR 8 Disc's rolling stock is also world-class: The latest Bontrager Aeolus Pro 3 Disc wheels are tubeless-ready, and cheat the wind from multiple angles. Weighing in at only 1600 grams, they snap up to speed with minimal effort. A wide 19.5mm interior rim width allows the tires to provide a better contact patch with the pavement, reducing rolling resistance and enhancing cornering grip. With appropriate tires, rim strips and gasketed valve stems, the Aeolus Pro 3 wheels can be set up tubeless, reducing rolling resistance further and practically eliminating flats. 700x25c Bontrager R3 Hard-Case Lite tires bring a smooth feel, low rolling resistance and confident grip to every mile.

Bontrager supplies the XXX OCLV carbon fiber road handlebars, accessory-ready alloy Pro Blendr stem and Ti-railed Montrose Elite saddle.

This bicycle can be ordered through Trek's Project One program, allowing you to choose thousands of different paint options and component choices. Please call for details.
