A cyclist's first road bike should be easy for anyone to enjoy. It should fit will, be comfortable to ride, easy to learn and also be affordable. That's the Domane AL 3.

Trek's Domane road line started with a bike built for challenging pro races in the early spring over cobblestones. The new bike was comfortable to help deal with terrible roads, lightweight for the steep ascents, and offered a comfortable position for a rider that might be on the bike for 8 hours or more. It turns out that same bike design has been perfect for recreational riders looking for a smooth-riding machine to enjoy day trips in the countryside. The Domane AL 3 is an affordable, comfortable aluminum bicycle that puts ride quality and comfort above nervous handling and an elbows-on-the-pavement aggressive fit.

The Domane AL 3 starts with a lightweight Alpha aluminum frame that puts the rider into a more upright posture. Called Endurance fit, the geometry of the Domane AL 3 lets a wider range of riders -and rider flexibilties- feel comfortable on a drop-handlebar road bicycle. The Domane AL 3's long wheelbase and more relaxed frame angles add a stable feel over rough and choppy pavement. Up front, a carbon fiber Domane fork not only reduces overall weight, but also soaks up more fatiguing vibration with clever blade shaping. Extra details make every ride better, and the Domane AL 3 has plenty. An aperture in the left chainstay for a DuoTrap S speed/cadence sensor (sold separately) eliminates the need for ugly zip-ties. Rack mounts and vanishing fender mounts add versatility for commutes and long-distance trips.

Correct fit is important, but the functionality and performance of the Domane AL 3 was also given priority. Shimano's 9-speed Sora components are found throughout the Domane AL 3 for a seamless feel and long service life. Adjustable-reach Sora levers make braking and shifting easy for a wide range of hand sizes, while redesigned Sora derailleurs require less hand strength to operate. A 50/34T Sora compact crankset and 11-28T 9-speed rear cassette boast a wide gearing range for roller-coaster hills. Alloy Bontrager wheels are wrapped with 700x28c Bontrager T2 tires, bringing a smooth feel and confident grip to the Domane AL 3.

Getting comfortable on a road bike requires excellent component choices on the part of the builder, and Trek pulled out all the stops in this department. The Montrose Comp saddle has been designed with a pressure-relief cutout, making riding in the drops more comfortable. An alloy Bontrager road handlebar makes hand position changes from lever hoods to handlebar drops less abrupt. An accessory-ready alloy Blendr stem keeps a handlebar computer or headlight close at hand.
