Giant's redesigned Defy series incorporates disc brakes into plenty of models, but the Defy Advanced Pro 2 brings stellar performance to the party.
Lightness doesn't seem to be easy to achieve with disc brake-equipped bikes, especially when the frame and fork needs to be reinforced for the calipers. But Giant has solved much of the problem with its Composite frame costruction. Using specific layup patterns, the Giant Defy Advanced series adds strength where needed, but keeps weight down with redesigned tube shapes. The reshaped seat stays, seat tube and top tube add vertical compliance to the Defy Advanced Pro frame, improving ride quality as well as reducing weight. In addition, the Giant D-Fuse SL seatpost has a unique shape that also improves ride quality over rough pavement. The oversized down tube reinforces the press-fit PowerCore bottom bracket, eliminating energy-robbing frame flex during out-of-the-saddle climbs. Up front, the tapered head tube and OverDrive 2 fork steerer tube anchor the fork blades, adding a more precise feel in fast turns or hard braking. Even the fork's steerer tube is entirely Composite construction, cutting weight and reducing vibration in equal meaures. Internal cable routing gives the bike a sleeker, more finished look while improving shifter cable life. An aperture for a RideSense speed and cadence sensor (sold separately) is found in the left chainstay. Like the rest of the Defy series bicycles from Giant, the Giant Defy Advanced Pro 2 features a taller head tube for a wider range of rider fits and flexibilities. A longer wheelbase improves stability, especially over rough tarmac.
The Defy Advanced Pro comes equipped with Shimano's 11-speed Ultegra derailleurs. Operating with ease and smoothness thanks to a recent redesign, the derailleurs require less hand strength to use. Shifting is done with Shimano's RS685 levers that also house the hydraulic reservoirs for the disc brakes. A Shimano Ultegra 50/34T compact crankset and 11-28T cassette offer a massive gearing range for challenging inclines. Shimano's RS785 hydraulic calipers reign in speed, clamping down on 140mm stainless steel rotors. Giant's own SL 1 alloy disc-specific wheels are wrapped with 25mm P-SL1 tires for exceptional lightness and grip. A Contact SL alloy handlebar, aaloy Contact SL stem and Contact SL Forward saddle complete this fondo-ready bike.
