This might be one of the finest road bicycles ever found here at Machinery Row. The Madone road bicycles went through a drastic re-engineering to provide exceptional aerodynamics as well as high strength, low weight, sublime ride quality and race-ready handling. The made-in-Wisconsin 7-Series of Madone bicycles use only the finest domestically-sourced HexSL raw carbon materials for the lightest weight as well as exceptional strength. Trek’s engineers looked at how aerodynamics affect a bicycle not only head-on, but from the side. Thus, the Kammtail Virtual Foil frame (or KVF) shape was used for low drag at many different wind angles. The Kammtail shape has been proven in prototype sportscar racing since the late 60’s to reduce weight while keeping aerodynamic efficiency high. The frame and all-carbon fork feature trailing edges that finish in a truncated style, and have been used in the pro peloton to great effect. Other wind-cheating features are used across the design, such as a hidden rear brake caliper tucked under the bottom bracket, internal cable routing and even a flush aperture for an ANT+ DuoTrap speed/cadence sensor (sold separately). The frame is constructed with Trek’s exclusive StepJoint assembly process for consistent quality control, uniform frame wall thickness and further weight reduction. The Madone’s fork has a tapered steerer tube for sure-footed handling in fast curves while keeping weight low with a one-piece molded construction. The Dura-Ace brake caliper is fit flush with the fork’s leading edge at the crown to reduce turbulence on the down tube. Trek even reduces the weight of the paint to a staggering 5 grams with the new VaporCoat paint.
Shimano’s 11-speed Dura-Ace Di2 9070 electronic shifting components form the revolutionary drivetrain on the Madone 7.9. Instead of cables and housing, only wiring connects the shifters to the derailleurs. Fingertip operation is nearly identical to any Shimano STI dual-control lever, making for a familiar feel. The speed of every shift is always lightning-quick and flawless. No matter the gearing combination or power being applied to the pedals, the Di2 drivetrain will complete every shift perfectly. The front derailleur even trims itself automatically! Battery life is between 850-900 miles, depending on front derailleur usage. The crankset is a Dura-Ace 9000 53/39T unit, and is installed in the Madone’s BB90 bottom bracket and is matched with an 11-25T Dura-Ace cassette. This provides the Madone 7.9 with a wide gearing range for steep climbs and fast descents. Bontrager’s Race Lite wheelset found on the Madone 7.9 is an aerodynamic alloy clincher using a slightly wider width for improved tire-to-pavement contact. Straight-pull blade spokes are threaded into DT Swiss-made hubs for increased lateral rigidity in fast corners. Even the star ratchet internals produce faster engagement for sprinting out of corners. Shod with 23mm Bontrager R4 kevlar-bead tires, the Race Lite wheels might be the perfect combination between light weight and aerodynamic design. Bontrager also provides the XXX Lite carbon fiber stem and sub-190 gram XXX Lite OCLV carbon fiber handlebar for superior vibration resistance as well as further weight reduction. A 215 gram Ti-railed Bontrager Team Issue saddle tops the carbon seatmast cap.
