Gary Fisher, father of the modern mountain bike, once took a 1940's Excelsior cruiser and grafted all manner of road components and motorcycle parts onto it to build the first true off-road bicycle. The Trek Sawyer pays homage to that humble beginning with a more modern take on construction and component design.
Built the right way and into the right shapes, Cro-Moly steel can do an outstanding job of soaking up rough trails. Trek's Platinum Series Cro-Moly steel tubes are custom-butted for light weight and a smooth ride quality, giving the Sawyer a buttery feel. In the 80's, a 26" wheel and tire combination was all Gary had to build his bike with, but the Sawyer runs lighter, high-performance 32-spoke alloy 29'er Bontrager Duster rims laced to Shimano M475 hubs for high strength and performance. Bontrager 29x2.35" off-road tires add bags of grip for singletrack and gravel. A Cro-Moly fork sits in a 1-1/8" FSA headset for easy serviceability, while a split dropout allows for single-speed conversion.
A Truvativ Firex 32/22T crankset and Shimano 9-speed 12-36T cassette offer a huge gearing range, while SRAM X.5 shifters, SRAM X.7 rear derailleur and Shimano Deore front derailleur handle gear selection. Avid's Juicy 3 hydraulic disc brakes function much better than old cantilever calipers and leftover motorcycle brake levers, adding confidence on descents. A Bontrager 25-degree sweep Crivitz handlebar, alloy Rhythm seatpost, alloy Race Lite stem and Evoke 2 saddle finish off this celebration to mountain biking history.
