Felt took the best raw carbon fiber material and let the design team of their endurance bike line go a little crazy. The result is the Z1. This is Felt’s best-ever bike for attacking sub-five-hour centuries and leading the pack during hilly “challenge rides”. Felt’s Road UHC Ultimate Nano carbon fiber has been precisely engineered to keep weight to an absolute minimum while keeping the strength to transmit every watt of every pedal stroke to the rear wheel. Felt’s proprietary InsideOut molding process and Modular Monocoque assembly enhances quality control and reduces the need for excess resin. The tapered head tube provides an anchor for the all-carbon fork, giving the Z1 razor-sharp handling in every corner and twisty descent. The BB30 bottom bracket allows the stiffest cranksets in the industry to be installed for maximum pedaling response. The Z1’s taller head tube permits an easier fit for a wider range of riders and flexibilities, while the longer wheelbase gives better stability on rough pavement. The Z1’s all-carbon fork is also produced with Felt’s own UHC Ultimate Nano carbon fiber, allowing it to soak up road vibration and holding perfect lines through fast corners. Internal cable routing in the Z1’s frame keeps the it clean and aero.
When Felt started with a frame like the Z1, they had to go all out with the component package. Enter Shimano’s latest 11-speed Dura-Ace Di2 component group. Yes, electronic shifting is still leading the technology charge, and the speed of shifting with Di2 is nothing short of stunning. Every shift is perfectly executed without hesitation, even during uphill charges under powerful riders. Expected milage between charges is between 900-1000 miles, depending on frequency of usage of the front derailleur. Charging is done at the junction box below the stem. The Dura-Ace shifters, derailleurs and brake calipers were all designed to work together flawlessly. A 594-gram FSA K-Force Light compact crankset is the “business end” of the Z1’s drivetrain. The crank’s carbon fiber arms, spider, 50/34T chainrings and huge BB30 spindle are actually lighter than a Dura-Ace unit. An 11-25T Shimano Ultegra cassette handles the gearing out back. Shimano’s RS81 carbon/aluminum wheelset tips the scales at 1700 grams without skewers, giving the Z1 a low rotating mass for faster acceleration and more nimble handling. The aluminum braking track of the RS81 produces better lever feedback, especially during wet braking, and the cold-forged hubs boast sealed ball bearings for phenomenally low resistance and long service life. The 20.8mm rim width ensures that any installed road tire will have a wider and more aggressive footprint than old-school rims, keeping lateral grip high in fast corners. Wrapping the RS81’s are 25mm Vittoria Diamante Pro Light tires. The 3T ARX II Team Stealth stem features titanium hardware, while the all-carbon 3T Ergonova Team Stealth road handlebar reduces weight while reducing road buzz further. A carbon-railed Prologo Scratch saddle sits atop a 3T Dorico carbon fiber seatpost to complete the cockpit of this rolling dream machine.
