Cross country mountain bike racing has become increasingly demanding on equipment as well as riders. Trek's Top Fuel 9.8 SL can take whatever you -and the race course- can dish out.

The ultimate XC race machines need to be light, but they also need to be plenty of other things as well. At the top of the list of the lightest materials is Trek's exclusive OCLV Mountain carbon fiber. Designed from the outset to survive the rigors of off-road riding, OCLV Mountain carbon fiber can put up with ham-fisted riding, powerful riders, and awful race courses. The main triangle and rear suspension seat stays of the Top Fuel 9.8 SL are produced from OCLV Mountain carbon, and bring the total frame weight to surprisingly low numbers. Strength is also a requirement for racing success, and the Top Fuel 9.8 SL has it by the boat-load. With an E2 tapered head tube and super-rigid PF92 bottom bracket, the Top Fuel 9.8 SL's frame transmits every watt to the rear wheel with no frame flex. Overall handling is improved as well, with no rubbery feel in fast, technical corners. Internal cable routing that remains rattle-free is due to Control Freak cable management, and it keeps the bike quiet as you sneak up on the competition. There's also removeable Carbon Armor that features a soft surface that quiets front tire roost, as well as protecting the paint on the lower down tube.

Suspension technology improves control and reduces rider fatigue. The Top Fuel 9.8 SL features Trek's proprietary Active Braking Pivot (or ABP) rear suspension geometry, ensuring that pedaling and braking forces do not interfere with suspension movement and vice versa. The pivot for ABP is the rear hub itself, keeping the rear wheel tracking smoothly over technical terrain, whether on the brakes or not. The upper pivot for the OCLV seat stays is connected to an ultra-light one-piece EVO link rear suspension component that also holds the rear shock. The overall length of the chain stays are slightly shorter than the previous Superfly FS model, giving the Top Fuel added torsional stiffness and a more nimble feel. A reverseable rear pivot "chip" in the upper seat stay of the ABP suspension allows the rider to slightly modify the Top Fuel 9.8 SL's geometry. Known as Mino Link, the bike can be set up with a slightly more "upright" geometry for improved handling, or more "relaxed" for better stability on rougher terrain and courses with long descents.

Control and handling need to be adjustable to the rider's preferences, and respond instantly to the terrain they are encountering. Air-adjustable suspension makes every mountain bike more responsive to changing trail conditions, and Trek has an exclusive rear shock to help deal with technical singletrack. The Fox Performance Float rear shock can soak up washboard surfaces and rock garens with equal tenacity with a technology they call RE:aktiv. Developed in conjuction with Penske Racing, Trek's Suspension Lab in California have developed a rear shock that outperforms every other rear shock over a wide range of trail surfaces. Manufactured by Fox, the Performance 32 Float rear shock can respond to a wider range of bumps -from small to large- better than anything due to the regressive damping of the RE:aktiv component. If it works for Formula 1 and IndyCars, it should work pretty well for cyclists, too! Mounted in a Full Floater shock mount, the Fox RE:aktiv rear shock is the core of the Top Fuel 9.8 SL's superior handling. There's even a remore lockout switch on the handlebars if you want to keep the bike feeling as rigid as you need. The suspension fork is also an air-adjustable Fox Performance 32 Float unit with a thru-axle hub mount. Installed in a tapered head tube, the Fox Performance 32 fork helps carve precise lines down technical trails. A 2-position remote damper can keep the fork locked out for pavement or gravel road climbs.

SRAM's 11-speed X1 shifter and XO1 rear derailleur handle gear-change duties across a 10-42T SRAM rear cassette. Matched with a 32T SRAM X1 Carbon direct-mount crankset, the Top Fuel 9.8 SL's drivetrain boasts reduced complexity, reduced weight and faster operation over bumpy and muddy terrain. Bontrager Kovee Pro OCLV Carbon wheels bring astonishingly low rotating weight to the party, and are Tubeless Ready to boot. Built around Boost110/148 hubs, the Kovee Pro wheelset are more laterally rigid than standard 29'ers, adding a dash of extra handling feel. Shod with 2.20" Tubeless Ready Bontrager XR1 Team Issue tires, the Top Fuel 9.8 SL has all it needs in the wheel department. Slowing those wheels down is the job of a set of SRAM Level TLM hydraulic disc brakes.

A Ti-railed Bontrager Montrose Elite saddle sits atop a featherweight OCLV Bontrager Pro seatpost for reduced pendular mass that might inhibit out-of-the-saddle charges. An alloy Bontrager Pro stam clamps a Race X Lite OCLV Mountain carbon handlebar.
