Trek's Fuel EX series have been the benchmark for full-suspension trail bikes for years, gathering entire trophy cases of awards along the way. How could Trek improve upon such an outstanding machine? Somehow, they did it.

The Fuel EX 9.8 27.5 Plus kept plenty of the right elements from the previous generation of the Fuel EX family. Trek's exclusive OCLV Mountain carbon fiber is still used to produce the main triangle of the Fuel EX 9.8, as well as the chainstays. This results in major weight reduction with pleny of added strength for enhanced handling and pedaling response. Anchoring the crankset is a PF92 press-fit bottom bracket, while an E2 tapered head tube enhances front suspension performance and overall handling. What's new? Pull up a chair...

The Fuel EX 9.8's down tube is no longer a heavier curved shape, but completely straight. Preventing the suspension fork crown from striking the down tube is the job of the Knock Block steerer stop found at the top of the head tube. Neat, huh? Rough trails require confident control, and Trek's Active Braking Pivot -or ABP- rear suspension geometry ensures excellent suspension performance, even under hard braking on rough descents. The upper EVO suspension link is a one-piece unit that resists torsional twisting that might inhibit the rear shock. There's even a moving lower suspension mount called Full Floater that allows the Fuel EX 9.8 to respond better to washboard surfaces and clattery, root-strewn singletrack.  A new detail can be found at the back of the EVO suspension upper where it meets the upper seat stays: a reverseable Mino Link chip that can alter the geometry of the Fuel EX 9.8 to be either upright and nimble, or slack and stable. The rear shock is an air-adjustable Fox Performance Float EVOL unit that boasts 130mm of suspension travel. Developed with input from Penske Racing Shocks, the rear shock boasts RE:aktiv suspension technology with a 3-position damper for excellent control in technical terrain. Up front, an air-adjustable Fox Performance 34 Float suspension fork keeps the front wheel planted through rock gardens. 140mm of suspension travel performance can be adjusted on the fly with a 3-position damper on the fork crown. 15mm thru-axles front and rear bring added torsional strength to the wheelset.

The "Plus" part of the Fuel EX isn't just about the tires. It also refers to the wider Boost110/148 hubs. With a wider hub comes a more rigid wheelset that enhances control in tight singletrack. 40mm-wide alloy SunRingle Duroc wheels are wrapped with huge tubeless-ready Bontrager 27.5x2.80" Hodag tires for outstanding grip on challenging trails and over scary rock gardens. Helping to keep that speed reigned in is a set of hydraulic Shimano Deore XT disc brakes. Shifting performance is also courtesy of Shimano's Deore XT family: The 11-speed shifters, front derailleur, Shadow Plus rear derailleur, 36/26T crankset and 11-40T wide-range cassette are all Shimano's renowned and durable XT components. Bontrager's Evoke 3 saddle sits atop a Rock Shox Reverb Stealth dropper post, while an alloy Line Pro stem grips a 35mm OCLV carbon fiber Line Pro handlebar.
