Trek's Fuel EX mountain bikes start here.

The Fuel EX has come of age, and the cycling media around the world have lauded its design and technology. But technology doesn't stand still... Trek's Fuel EX 5 has seen some upgrades that give the bike line better performance and longer suspension travel while keeping affordability and value. Using Trek's own Alpha Platinum aluminum, the Fuel EX 5's frame has been shaped for impressive torsional strength as well as light weight. By straightening out the down tube (they call it Straight Shot), the Fuel EX 5 gets a light frame that resists flex even better, especially under braking. If you're worried about the fork crown denting the frame in the event of a crash, the Fuel EX 5's clever Knock Block headset prevents that. Suspension has always been the key to speed and control, and the Fuel EX 5 boasts an Active Braking Pivot -or ABP- rear triangle. ABP helps connect the rear tire to the ground while being unaffected by braking forces, even in challenging rock gardens or fast descents. Connecting the shock to the upper seatstays is a one-piece EVO rocker link that resists lateral twisting that makes any rear shock perform badly. At the same pivot juncture is a set of inserts called Mino Links. By reversing their position, the bike's geometry can be set up slack and stable, or upright and nimble. The rear shock's Full Floater lower mount responds to the chainstay's movement, helping it react better to small bumps and washboard surfaces. Up front, the tapered E2 head tube adds an extra dash of handling precision, especially in rough terrain or under hard braking. A press-fit PF92 bottom bracket adds flex-free power delivery. A full-suspension bike is only as good as the suspension, and the Fuel EX 5 has that covered. An air-adjustable RockShox Deluxe RL shock delivers 130mm of travel to the rear wheel, giving the bike plenty of cushion and control on challenging singletrack. Up front, an air-adjustable RockShox Sektor Silver RL suspension fork helps keep the front wheel planted with 130mm of travel. A TurnKey lockout knob allows the rider to shut off the fork on gravel roads. Details like an in-triangle bottle mount and Control Freak internal cable routing make the Fuel EX 5 a bike with no corners cut.

Shimano's 10-speed Deore shifters, front derailleur and Shadow+ rear derailleur handle gear change duty, while a Race Face Ride 36/22T crankset and 11-36T Shimano cassette add a massive gearing range for roller-coaster trails. 29'er wheels allow the Fuel EX 5 to climb over rock-strewn trails and technical terrain. Bontrager AT-650 alloy rims are shod with knobby 29x2.30" XR1 tires, adding plenty of grip in sand, dirt and mud. With 32-spoke Boost100/148 hubs, the Fuel EX 5's wheels are ready for miles of singletrack. Helping to regulate speed is the job of a pair of Shimano hydraulic disc brakes that perform in rain or shine. Bontrager also brings an alloy SSR seatpost, Evoke 1.5 saddle, 31.8mm alloy handlebar and alloy Rhythm Comp stem to the parts list.
