Building a hardtail racing mountain bike that fits well isn't rocket science. Two wheel sizes clear up fit issues that one wheel size just can't address. Trek's Smart Wheel Size platform brings 29'er wheels to the rider and frame sizes that work best with that diameter, and smaller 27.5" wheels for a better overall fit for smaller riders. Combining that philosophy with a light and rugged Alpha Gold aluminum frame gives any rider the right size and fit to enjoy the ride.
The X-Caliber 8 boasts an adjustable Rock Shox Recon Gold suspension fork with 100mm of travel (80mm on 13.5" size), keeping the front wheel planted on technical trails. There's even a lockout knob on the fork crown for a better feel on pavement or climbing gravel roads. SRAM X5 10-speed shifters operate an X7 front deraillerur and GX rear derailleur for smooth shifts, even under hard pedaling loads. A SRAM S1000 36/22T crankset is matched with an 11-36T SRAM cassette, offering a huge gearing range for roller-coaster trails. Shimano M355 hydraulic disc brakes reign in speed, even in muddy or wet conditions. Bontrager Mustang rims are shod with Bontrager 2.20" X2 knobby tires for confident grip. A Bontrager Evoke 1.5 saddle sits atop an alloy SSR seatpost while a Bontrager alloy bar and stem complete the cockpit.
