Size: 12.5" frame with 26" wheels
Young riders need encouragement. From finding a helmet they like, to finishing a day-long Cub Scout ride, many things can come together that let them know they're good at biking. The Trek KRX helps them find confidence with better performance and a great fit.
The first thing a kid's bike needs to be is light. A heavy bicycle can be too much work for their little engines, and that can make every hill tougher than it needs to be. The frame of the KRX is built with Trek's Alpha Aluminum, making it feather-light and agile. Bottle cage mounts are hard to find on kid's bikes, but the KRX has them! Alloy 26" wheels and 1" Kenda Kontender tires reduce rotating weight for quick acceleration.
Running a very close second is comfortable fit. Shimano's 9-speed dual-control brake levers have an adjustable reach for little hands, and bar-top brake levers add another useful position at the top of the shallow-drop alloy handlebars. Shimano Sora derailleurs make gear shifts easier, While a 50/34T alloy crankset and 12-27T rear cassette boast a wide gearing range for steep hills and long rides. Even the crankset length has been shortened to better fit younger riders. Shimano cantilever brakes add effective stopping power while allowing knobby tires to be used for gravel rides or cyclocross. A comfy kid's saddle sits atop an alloy seatpost with one-bolt adjustment. There's even an aperture for a DuoTrap S speed and cadence sensor (sold separately) for the smartphone equipped youngster!
