The steel touring bicycle used to be set in stone: Steel frame, cantilever brakes, wide gearing range, racks everywhere. But times have changed, and Trek saw what the 520 needed to be a better bike. Specifically, the brakes.
Butted cromoly steel makes up the frame and fork, keeping strength -and reliability- high while ensuring a smooth ride quality. A long wheelbase gives the 520 Disc a stable feel on broken pavement, gravel surfaces and long descents, especailly with heavy panniers. Frame and fork braze-ons are found throughout the 520 Disc, including rack mounts, 3 bottle mounts, fender mounts and even a pump peg on most sizes behind the head tube. A rear Bontrager Interchange Touring rack is included. Boasting a 55 lb weight capacity, the rack even has lower mount rails to keep the bike's center of gravity low to aid in handling.
The 520's conponents include a Shimano Deore rear derailleur, a Shimano Alivio front derailleur, Shimano 9-speed bar-end shifters with selectable index/friction adjustment, an 11-32T Shimano cassette and a Shimano M590 48/36/26T triple crankset for tackling challenging ascents while fully loaded. Hayes CX Expert cable-operated disc brakes clamp 160mm rotors for confident stopping power on downhills, even in rainy conditions. A touring bicycle needs reliable wheels, and Trek delivers in that department as well. 36-spoke wheels are built up with alloy tubeless-ready rims and 32mm AW1 hardcase tires. A Bontrager alloy Race handlebar, SSR seatpost, Elite Blendr stem and Evoke 1 saddle complete this tour-ready bike.
