Over the years, Trek's Domane bicycles have been seen ridden to victory by Fabian Cancellara over some of the worst roads in Northern Europe. Trek have been refining their aluminum-framed Domane road bicycles for nearly as long, and the current Domane ALR is dazzling.
With a lighter, more refined hydroformed frame made possible with what Trek calls Invisible Weld Technology, the Domane ALR looks like a bike costing thousands more. Using their proprietary Alpha 200 Series aluminum frame, Trek kept the Domane ALR 4's weight low for easier climbing while retaining high strength. The frame features a tapered head tube and BB86.5 press-fit bottom bracket that anchors the crankset. Both elements add rigidity to the frame for improved pedaling response, especially during steep climbs. The IsoSpeed decoupler found at the top tube/seat tube juncture boasts a pivot and cartridge bearings that allows the frame to flex vertically, taking a significant edge off of rough pavement, potholes and even cobblestones. All this allows the Domane ALR 4 to keep the rider fresher over rough roads, allowing them to cover more distance comfortably. The Domane ALR 4 sports a carbon fiber fork with a tapered steerer that soaks up fatiguing vibration while keeping the steering feel precise for fast turns and descents. Useful details abound on the Domane ALR, including an aperture for a DuoTrap S speed/cadence sensor (sold separately), vanishing fender mounts and internal brake cable routing. The Domane ALR features Trek's Endurance geometry, allowing the bike to fit a wider range of rider sizes and flexibilties.
With a frameset like that, the rest of the bike would seem to be a hard act to follow! Fear not, as Trek chose Shimano's 10-speed Tiaga components to adorn the Domane ALR. The adjustable-reach levers, derailleurs, 50/34T compact crankset and 11-32T cassette are all Tiagra components designed to work smoothly and precisely in concert. Bontrager's alloy wheels are tubeless-ready, and are shod with 28mm (yes, 28mm) wide R1 Hard-Case Lite tires for outstanding ride quality and smoothness. Tektro's alloy brake calipers are a direct-mount 2-bolt design that allows for greater tire clearance and improved lever feel. A Bontrager Affinty Comp saddle, alloy Bontrager seat post, alloy Bontrager Race VR-C handebar and alloy Blendr stem complete the cockpit of this extraordinary machine.
