Trek's first "aero road" machine showed they were serious in delivering high-speed performance without adding weight or a harsh ride.
With this version of the the Madone, Trek's flagship racer went from a classic lightweight machine to a warrior in the wind. The light weight is still there: Trek's exclusive OCLV 700 series carbon fiber makes for a 725 gram (!!) unpainted frame in a 56cm size. Adding Kammtail Virtual Foil -or KVF- tube shaping allows the bike to slice through the air more effectively while still resisting crosswinds. The rear brake is tucked under the crankset, eliminating the drag produced from the usual position on the seat stays. The continuous length of the KVF seat stays also allowed Trek's engineers to refine the bike's ride quality. Dealing with rough and choppy pavement is easier than many "aero road" bikes with heavy blade-style stays. Ride quality is further addressed with Trek's no-cut seat mast that offers better vertical compliance and lower weight than a seat post. Even the all-carbon fiber fork gets the KVF treatment. Internal cable routing keeps the bike clean for high speeds and solo breakaways. Torsional strength is needed for instant pedaling response, and the Madone 7-series brings a rock-solid BB90 bottom bracket to the party. An E2 tapered head tube also adds a more precise feel in fast turns and descents. This example of a Madone 7 features Trek's more aggressive H1 fit, making it easy for the rider to get an aero position from day 1. Taking the low-drag concept even further, this Trek Madone 7 even features an aperture for an ANT+ DuoTrap speed/cadence sensor (sold separately) in the left chainstay. This eliminates the need for clumsy zip-ties.
Shimano's Ultegra 6800 components are found throughout the drivetrain of this Madone 7-series. The Ultegra crankset sports 50/34T compact chainrings, while the 11-28T Shimano cassette adds a wide gearing range for steep ascents. Shimano Ultegra dual-control levers feature adjustable reach and more carbon fiber for weight reduction. The redesigned Ultegra derailleurs also need less effort to operate. Shimano 105 brake calipers help keep speed reigned in. Bontrager's Race X Lite alloy wheels boast DT Swiss internals and an alloy freehub body for long life and positive engagement. The rims are tubeless-ready, and need TLR rim strips and gasketed valve stems (sold separately). Toal wheelset weight is only 1518 grams! Bontrager's excellent 700x25c R4 folding-bead tires provide confident lateral grip in high-speed turns. Bontrager also supplies the Montrose Elite saddle, alloy Elite stem and alloy road handlebars.
